Silver Lining for Homeowners, Workers and Small Business?

The Worker, Homeownership and Business Assistance Act of 2009, signed into law on November 6th, extends two popular tax breaks – the first-time homebuyer credit and the expanded net operating loss (NOL) carryback.

First-time homebuyer credit. Scheduled to expire on November 30, 2009, this credit (10% of the purchase price up to $8,000) for principal residences purchased by first-time buyers has been extended to include purchases taking place on or before April 30, 2010. Presenting Windows 7

October marked the release of Windows 7, the latest version of Microsoft's Windows operating system (OS) product line. Microsoft has been developing the Windows OS for the past 25 years, and Windows 7 builds upon this long history, delivering a robust and well-featured product.

As of this writing, we've not yet had access to the final product; however, we have utilized public betas, and a public final release candidate. In our testing, Windows 7 is slightly faster than Windows XP and much faster than Vista. It also offers some very intriguing features.

International Financial Reporting Standard... Coming to the U.S.

Owners and CFOs of privately held companies, take note: In November 2008, the SEC released its proposed roadmap for the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in the U.S. At a joint meeting earlier this month, the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) reaffirmed their commitment to improve both IFRS standards and U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and to bring about their convergence.

Capital Gains and Dividend Tax Rates

The long-term capital gains tax rate was lowered when former President George W. Bush signed the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 – from 8 percent to 5 percent at the lowest tier, and from 20 percent to 15 percent at the highest tier. The tax rate on qualified dividends was lowered from the taxpayer's marginal income tax rate to 15 percent.
